The Reaper Money, Sex and Prostitution in the City (English Edition)

Prostitution is said to be the oldest profession and women its number one practitioners. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango, and for every market, there is the buyer and the seller. In 2015 in Nigeria, the country's National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), shed light on the other side of prostitution, a light that debunked the idea of prostitution being a gendered profession. NACA brought it home to all that men are also active participants in the business of prostitution. At a lecture to mark the World's AIDS day, the director of NACA opened-up on what many know but refuse to acknowledge - that there are men, who like some women, earn their living by offering their bodies for money.
According to NACA, about 3,500 of prostitutes in Abuja are men. Of that number, 60 percent are married men – yes, married men, you know, those supposedly protectors of the moral fabrics of our society and pillars of the churches. And yet, most literature on prostitution have women as the predators while men are cast as victims. Mention the words prostitution, commercial sex worker and it's either accompanied by a she or her, never he or him. But that has changed. With improvement in the economic status of women, the veil is also being lifted on the activities of some men who, just like their female counterparts are ready to offer sex for money to live the type of life they crave.
The activities of these men have also ruined homes and lives but because their victims are women, they prefer to bear the consequence of their patronage of the male prostitutes in silence because head or tail they are the ones who end up being branded “prostitutes”.
