The English Countryside

Why did the air feel so dense? And why did she feel the need to fill the quiet between them? “If it were up to me, I would pay no mind to you visiting my rooms unaccompanied, and I most certainly would not expect you to wed me. Not that I want you visiting my rooms…” She was rambling. She never rambled.

“I understand,” he assured her with a wave of his hand.

“I am sorry,” she said, glancing to her fingers, which were still fiddling with the little green leaves of the shrub. “I have made this so very awkward.”

Alistair tilted his head. “So you do want me to visit your rooms?”

“No! I mean—” Stop. Talking.

What was wrong with her? Was it the topic of marriage that had gotten her so… so… anxious? She’d never been so clumsy with her words before. Her cheeks began to warm. She opened her hand and let her small collection of leaves flutter to the ground.

“If you want me to visit your rooms, you need only ask.” Alistair flashed her a cheeky grin.
