Sharing his love for poetry with younger readers, Mense uses his poems to build their creative imagination, develop their confidence and foster positive emotional health. Not only do children read to relax but reading also makes them feel better. Reading aloud gives them confidence, increases their fluency and helps them to speak clearly, maintaining a head start as they begin to explore the world of sounds, rhythms and rhymes.

Mense draws inspiration from his experiences and observations in the classroom, the playground and school canteen to bring out the humorous side of ‘slices of life’ through the eyes of a child. From a wide range of children-based poems, he centres them around the child’s imagination and experiences. Children will love reading about subject matter they can relate to.

These poems are best enjoyed at bed times, during periods of quiet relaxation and shared moments with friends and family. In his collection he has included his first poem, ‘Save The Best For Harold’ as well as the poem which is the title of this collection ‘Take The Jelly Off The Telly.’ Children will enjoy acting out scenes from a range of his poems including, ‘I Want To Be Saved By A Dragon.’

He has been a member of a weekly writing group, for the past three years and has just finished a Creative Writing course at Goldsmiths’ College. He lists amongst his hobbies: drawing, reading and watching Science Fiction films.
This is his first collection of children’s poems. I am sure the response he gets from this collection will inspire him to write further poems. This collection will not be his last.
I hope you enjoy his first collection as much as I did. We will be hearing a lot more from him in the future.
