BOKO HARAM TERRORISM AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR NATIONAL SECURITY : Boko Haram Terrorism and National Security (English Edition)

ABSTRACT
The study examined Boko haram terrorism and its implications for national security. The specific objectives were to, determine the causes of terrorism in Nigeria, determine the effect of Boko Haram terrorism on Nigeria, examine the implications of Boko Haram terrorism on international security system and determine how Boko Haram terrorism can be mitigated in Nigeria. The research design that is adopted for the study is the qualitative descriptive design, secondary source of data was used to provide raw information and first-hand evidence. Validity of this study was based on the credibility of the source of the secondary data and expert assessment, Secondary data surfing online and offline such as books reports are employed for this study. This includes journals, books, and online materials, qualitative Descriptive analysis of data to elicit the features for inferential conclusion is employed for this study. The study revealed that, Proliferation of weapons of war, corruption, unemployment, the vicious cycle of poverty, Weak institutional structure and Religious motivation are the causes of terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria, the impact of Boko Haram insurgency has affected agriculture and food supply, claimed a lot of lives and inflicted injuries on thousands of people, destroyed lots of houses and has greatly affected the educational sector, the implications of Boko Haram terrorism on the security system include:, arms proliferation, Illicit financial transactions, increase government expenditure on security, terrorism affects the foreign policy of many nations national image, huge number of lives have been destroyed, and properties worth billions also destroyed. People live in perpetual fear of insecurity, furthermore, the study revealed that to curb or mitigate the increase in insurgencies and terrorism by the Boko Haram sector, the government needs to pursue urgently a more comprehensive strategy that targets the economic, social and cultural roots of the crisis.The study therefor recommended that, the government should ensure that the basic needs of man’s survival are met. There is need to invest in the agricultural sector in order to improve food production; rehabilitate and build more health care centres which will be fully equipped; education should be free for all at least at primary level and more schools with quality facilities be put in place.
