A civilization referred to as the Network first encounters a civilization like itself when it is suddenly and mercilessly attacked by powerful, emotionless invaders. The attackers overrun all but the Network's homeland, apparently bent on their total annihilation. But a new technological development prevents them from entering the Network's homeland, and obliterating what remains of the civilization.
In this time of relative security, the Network attempts to make contact with the clandestine alien civilization by sending an expedition to the enemy homeland itself. This narrative is told from the perspective of one who was sent on this expedition, detailing the events and story of the venture.
