Laura had grown up in a house out in the country, with very few neighbors. One neighbor was an old woman named Ada who lived alone in a shack about a mile down the road. She was a recluse who never seemed to come out of her home or go anywhere. Laura and her friends thought she was a witch. They were scared of her and dared each other to walk up close to the house. Sometimes they would throw rocks at the house to try to get the old witch to come outside, then they would run away screaming in fear if she did. Laura moved away at age 17 and never came back. But now, in her 50's, she found herself in a very depressing and lonely time in her life, so she decided to go back to her old homeplace and confront some things from her past. One of those things was Ada's old shack. She was surprised to find it was still standing after all these years, but the biggest surprise of all was what she finds hidden under the floorboards of the old house, an old journal, locked away for years in a box. From this discovery, many secrets and lies from the past begin to come to light, and as Ada's life story begins to unfold before her, Laura's life also begins to come together and make sense. Fate had brought her back home and provided her with answers to questions she didn't even know she was supposed to ask.
