The Bermuda Triangle (English Edition)

If ever a book captured the zeitgeist of an era it was Charles Berlitz’s The Bermuda Triangle.

A squadron of five US Navy planes on a routine mission disappears - and so does the rescue plane sent out to search for them.

A ship is found abandoned on the high seas with no trace of passengers or crew. A submerged vessel mysteriously rises to the surface from its grave beneath the dark waters. For centuries there had been tales of mysterious happenings in the stretch of ocean between Bermuda and Florida. Since 1945 over 100 planes and ships and 1000 people have simply vanished here into thin air. It had been known as the Hoodoo Sea, the Graveyard of the Atlantic or the Devil’s Triangle.

Charles Berlitz made the mystery world famous when he published his bestselling book in 1973. He spent over five years investigating this enigma which has baffled scientists for decades. Are the many UFO’s that have been sighted in the area hijacking boats and aircraft some kind of extraterrestrial survey of human activity? Are electromagnetic impulses from power sources of ancient civilizations causing space-time warps that wrench vessels into other dimensions? Are the disappearances somehow connected with the lost continent of Atlantis, said to lie beneath the sea?

In the era of nuclear fear, Cold War paranoia and unexplained sightings in the Nevada desert, this book tapped into a fascination with the paranormal which characterised the 1970s. To this day it remains an all-time classic. The Bermuda Triangle has sold over 20 million copies since publication and has been translated into thirty languages.

‘Frankly, it’s spellbinding!’- Kirkus Reviews

‘Chillingly recounts the amazing circumstances surrounding the losses of literally hundreds of ships, planes, and people … Dips into man’s archaeological past, ‘time-space warps,’ and ‘black holes’ to offer some clues … it’s fascinating’ - Detroit News

Charles Berlitz was born in New York in 1913, the grandson of Maximilian Berlitz, founder of the Berlitz language schools. He graduated with honours from Yale University and spoke thirty languages. He joined the family firm but sold it in the late 1960s. He became a noted writer on the paranormal and published a number of books including The Mystery of Atlantis, Mysteries from Forgotten Worlds, Without a Trace, The Lost Ship of Noah and The Dragon’s Triangle. He died in 2003.
