The Symphony: Volume 2: Elgar to the Present Day (Pelican) (v. 2)

Born in 1921 at leamington, Warwickshire, the composer Robert Simpson was educated at Westminster City School and began his career as a medical student. After two years he decided to change to music and studied with Herbert Howells until, in 1951, he obtained his D.Mus. at Durham. The same year he joined the staff of the B.B.C. Music Division, where he still works. He is well qualified to edit this book since, amongst other works, he has written three symphonies himself, of which No. 1 has been recorded. Dr Simpson is a frequent broadcaster and, apart for B.B.C. publications on Sibelius and Nielsen, Bruckner and the Symphony, he published a book in 1952, Carl Nielsen, Symphonist. He holds the Carl Nielsen Medal (Denmark) and Kilenyi Bruckner Medal of Honor (USA).
