CRUISE THE DOURO RIVER (English Edition)

This book is intended for the use of tourists enjoying a boat cruise along the Douro River. The book describes the route sequentially upstream through Portugal from Porto towards the Spanish border and inland to Salamanca. Some of the interesting sites are inland from the river and are reached by road. The book is illustrated with many colour photographs.
Portugal is the most western country of Europe bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, and by Spain to the north and the east. The republic of Portugal also contains the Azores and Madeira.
The Douro River originates near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province and flows towards Porto and the sea. On the way the river passes through a major vine growing region. Originally wine was transported by boat but most is now transported by road.
The total length of the river is 897 kilometres. For 112 kilometres, the river forms part of the national border line between Spain and Portugal. Along here it is narrow and passes through canyons. The Douro enters Portuguese territory only just after the confluence with the Águeda River. Apart from Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia near the river mouth, there are really only three centres of any size, Pinhão, Peso da Régua and further upstream Foz do Tua. Cruise boats only go as far as Barca d’Alva near to the Spanish border. Most of the sights along the river are of countryside and a sculptured landscape of vineyards. Visits are made by road by the cruise companies to places of interest that are away from the river, places such as Mateus Palace, Castelo Rodrigo and further afield to Salamanca.
Most cruise companies will also arrange visits to quintas where wine making processes can be seen and the wines, especially Port wine may be sampled. Along the river apart from the vineyards, olive and almond plantations can be seen.
The book describes and illustrates sights along Douro and the stops on the river with visits to:
Porto, Amarante, Peso da Régua, Mateus Palace, Pinhao, Lamego, Castelo Rodrigo and Salamanca.
