In the year 2090, Kai Kessler has a small problem—what to do with the rest of his life. Having graduated high school, participated in his YOS, Year of Service, to his community, he waits for the results of his exhaustive series of aptitude tests, known as the P-19’s, to offer him financial assistance to further his education in fields designated by the tests.

But not everyone is offered financial help and it’s a tough world economy following the rising tides of the Surge and the loss of all satellites in the Cascade. Plus, everyone and even everything in his world seems smarter than him. Standing on the precipice of adulthood Kai’s future is looking bleak when a letter from the United States Marine Corps arrives, inviting him to join but asking for a quick response.

Service in the armed forces of the United States if by invitation only and rather than risk waiting for uncertain offers of his P-19 results he decides to accept a contract from the Corps for a pilot armored warfare program.

Not sure what the Corps sees in him, Kai finds himself teamed with an artificial intelligence, an ultra advanced targeting computer he names Sue, part of his crew in the new infantry fighting vehicle he’s expected to command. Kai just wants his life to make a difference.

Unknown to him, Sue wants exactly the same thing, only she has plans of her own.
