Yet, few know it came from the play, "Pygmalion" by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, which premiered in a Vienna theater in 1913 and later in London in 1914. The character Pygmalion goes back to Ancient Greece who was a mythological sculptor who carves and falls in love with a statue of a girl. Shaw's play and the movie are satires and so is "My Faux Lady," set in 21st century Miami, Florida. A secondary-school teacher teaches a tattooed South Beach nightclub girl to be a lady, and passes her off as one in upper-middle-class Miami society. The teacher, same name as the original play and the movie, Professor Henry Higgins, gives private lesson using the cellphone and the internet. The reader encounters both lunacy and insights into what is wrong with secondary education in the United States and how to become a True Lady.
