Chacho, a Dalit in the North Malabar region of Kerala is an inventor of answers to the puzzles and torments of the people in his village. He is looked upon as a messiah for many as he redeems many lives from horrendous situations with the help of his reptile friend, a king cobra which he calls “Manikyan.” He was a dear husband of Celine a pious Catholic and loving father of Davis, a model boy in the village.
But a nun named sister Ajitha advised him to give up his pagan ways and turn a good Christian. Chacko refuses to accept her advice. In the same day she happens to see how Chacko performs sorcery in front of a sizable crowd. It infuriates her and she hits the snake with a stone. Chacko, though meek and gentle by nature declares her death if his pet snake is affected. The snake was killed and the very next night sister Ajitha’s dead body was found in the village river.
Chacko is arrested on circumstantial evidence and tortured to death in the police station cell. The heart broken Celine commits suicide. The orphaned Davis’s uncle takes him to Telangana where he continues his education. The brilliant student Davis proves that the rags to riches story is not fictional by becoming the Chief Editor of one of the nation’s leading news paper.
When Dr. Nisha, his lady love flew from New York to spend time with him in his holidays, she suggested they visited his village to investigate the mystery behind his father’s death.
Initially Davis was unwilling to her suggestion mainly because he feared that further investigation into it would consolidate the allegation. But she motivated him and assured him of reaching a different truth. Finally Davis agrees to her suggestion.
In Karuvankode, his home village, they tried to trace the three constables who roughed up and killed Chacko in the police station cell. But the three of them were killed before their reach. One was on a death bed. The second had turned lunatic because of the guilty feeling and committed suicide and the third was shot dead in an encounter with the police who found him being involved in drug dealings.
Now the only hope is to search and find the inspector who had arrested Chacko. The investigation revealed that the inspector chose to become an aghori sanyasi in Banaras. Davis and Nisha set out for Banaras and they met him at the end. Form him they understood that it was DSP Itty Avira, brother of Fr. Sebastian, vicar of the Saint Antony’s Church, Karuvankode had orderd for his custodial death.
Both Davis and Nisha met the retired SP Itty Avira who was his death bed now. From him they knew that his brother Sebastian, a Catholic priest was behind the murder of both sister Ajitha and Chacko.
