The monograph contains comparative analysis of political cultures and social changes taking place in countries of the West and Russia in the 1980s-90s. The authors analyze economic development and the course of reforms in Russia and other postcommunist countries. Political behavior is one of the foci of this comparative study: election and protest behavior, political identification, trust in democratic and authoritarian institutions, national and state identity, etc. This work is based on numerous sociological and political science studies. Extensive bibliography in several languages. This book was first published in the Netherlands under the title From Cold War to Cold Peace? Tilburg: Tilburg University Press, 1997. In the process of translation, this book was essentially updated and enlarged with recent data of All-Russian surveys and other data about the political realities of Russia.
