The freedom of the press is an essential element of American democracy. The press has historically informed citizens about issues central to their direct participation in civil society, and has acted as the conduit between the voter and elected officials. With the guidance of editors Geneva Overholser and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, this volume examines the role of the press in a democracy, investigates alternative models used throughout world history to better understand how the American press has evolved into what it is a today, and considers the challenges facing the media in the current environment.
The Press, a collection of essays by the nation¿s leading journalism scholars and professionals, examines the history, identity, roles, and future of the American press, with an emphasis on topics of concern to both practitioners and consumers of American Media. These topics cover the role of the press as a watchdog, and the dynamic between the press and the government, as well as the Federal Communications Comission: the role and function of the press in times of war - a free press versus a responsible press; alternative and minority media, the Internet, and the monopolization of media; and the legacy of the First Amendment and the marketplace of ideas. The Press addresses the issue of a growing corporate media, in which the pressures of commerce result in a decreasing supply of the information people need to be responsible participants in a democratic society, and explores the kinds of journalism that are essential to democracy itself.
