The Journalist: Part I: Yemen (Andrey Obnorsky series) (English Edition)

It is October 1984 and twenty-one year old Arabic language student Andrey Obnorsky is posted from the Soviet Union to South Yemen as a translator to the Soviet military advisors.

Andrey’s excitement at being sent to an exotic foreign country and joining an elite special forces unit, speznaz, quickly wears off when he is faced with the harsh reality on the ground. Hotblooded, impulsive and at times insubordinate, he tries to navigate the complex bureaucratic web spun by self-serving Soviet officials, and as the conflict-torn country threatens to implode, Andrey discovers that sometimes the enemy from within is the one to be feared the most.

At times comical, but more often harrowing, the novel is based on the author’s own experiences as a young Soviet translator in South Yemen (Part One) and later in Libya (Part Two). The Journalist is part of a cycle of six criminal adventure novels tied together by its main protagonist, the reporter Andrey Obnorsky. The action of the other novels unfolds in St. Petersburg during the peak years of gangster capitalism in the 1990s. The TV series Bandits’ Petersburg based on the books was released in 2000 and remains among the ten top-rated TV projects in Russia.
