The Earth Commandment reigns over the homeworld. It is the lone superpower in the Solar System. From Sol to the moons of Jupiter it rules, commanding legions, and it is expanding. Slowly, inexorably, under one Potentate after another, by words or by war, the Commandment expands. It has ruled Mars for centuries. Earth has been brought to Mars, and in cities beneath titanic domes citizens go about lives no different from those of their Terran brethren. Beyond these false blue skies, the red planet is slowly made to bloom. This is the world into which Janos and Virgil Artem have been born.

Janos dreams of becoming an officer in the military of the Earth Commandment. Talented with machines, he works under the eccentric Dr. Glick on a prototype weapon that will surpass all that have come before it. An explosive encounter sets into motion events which propel Janos, and the prototype, onto the battlefield. Prowess and valor may draw the eyes of his superiors, yet war is not the only danger that awaits him.

Virgil, meanwhile, is bored. School is routine, dull, and his friends seem to offer little more than temporary distractions. He wants his brother home so they can go back to the fun they used to have. A near-miss in traffic suddenly sees Virgil caught between the military and radical Martians determined to win Mars its freedom. Virgil will need all his wits, and the aid of an unexpected ally, to survive a battle he never asked to fight.

The Brothers Artem do not know it, but they have been marked. War, deceit, and revolution are tools, in the right hands, as much as words, as much as people. The one who has chosen them will gift Janos and Virgil in ways that should not be possible, so they may better serve a design as old as the Earth Commandment. All they have to do is keep their promise to a god.
