The Pulpit and the Bottle (English Edition)
Sam Daughtry was a minister with a gift for words that landed him a tall steeple pastorate at the age of 32. But he fell from that pinnacle of success as quickly as he climbed it. He might have been another Billy Graham if it hadn’t been for a doctor’s prescription. He started drinking after he took an alcoholic tonic for his nerves. While this winner of WTCU speaking medals had never tasted a drop of beverage alcohol, he had the predisposition for addiction, both physically and psychologically. Years later, he sold those medals to buy drink. The Pulpit and the Bottle is a biography written by Willard Daughtry, Sam’s oldest son who lived most of his life hating his father for destroying his family. Willard only learned the truth of Sam’s turnaround and successes through Alcoholics Anonymous twenty years after Sam’s death. Frances, Willard’s stepmother insisted he listen to a tape recording of a speech Sam gave at an AA convention a year or two before his death in 1956. That act changed Willard’s life, prompting him to write the book as an act of forgiveness to both Sam and Frances, knowing that the story needed to be shared. He finally was at peace with his father’s memory. Willard finished the book about 1980, but it took another 25 years to get it published for a variety of reasons, emotional, technical and time.
