Karamjeet's face was flushed red. He was shivering badly. He got up to remove his wet clothes and moved towards a rock to sit down.

Balwinder heard a thud and felt a spray of warm blood on his face. As he looked up, his face shuddered with horror to see Karamjeet fall on the snow. He saw that the top part of his head was blown off, and the grey matter was oozing out of the remaining portion of his head. Somebody had shot Karamjeet, and the bullet had pierced his head from behind and exited from the forehead, splattering blood all around. A bloodstream was flowing from his head onto the snow.

It was a pleasant spring morning, one of the rare days without haze in the valley. The visibility was excellent, and one could see the distant peaks. The early rays of dawn were beginning to paint the snowclad mountains of the Pir Panjal ranges in golden colour. The Indian army and Pakistan posts on the other side of the valley were quiet. There was no movement, probably due to the sniper threat prevailing in the area.

A silent drone flew over the valley, and a display console inside the makeshift operations room showed the live stream of images. Sitting in front of the console, Rajbir could see the view of the enemy post across the valley. The drones had been operating since the first light, and a trained analyst was analysing its footage, but finding a camouflaged sniper with a drone camera was a long shot that they had decided to take. He had deployed three sniper teams comprising a sniper and a buddy from his team in the dark of the night. All the units were equipped with secured wireless voice-activated radios. There was no report from them either.

Why was such a deployment done by Major Rajbir? What happened in this operation? Did they succeed or fail?

Balwant aimed at the sniper painted in the rock colour and sitting in plain sight. He took a deep breath, aimed at the target's nose, and pulled the trigger.
“The bullet has gone into the target's head below the helmet. Excellent shot, Sir," the buddy Sepoy Chand observed.
“Oscar Sierra 01, one kill conf…….…,” Balwant’s voice faded.
Rajbir heard Balwant taking deep breaths as if he were having difficulty breathing.
"Sierra one hit, Sir….. It was a dummy,” Chand reported.
“Balwant and Chand, hold tight and wait for evacuation,” Rajbir was running against time. He knew he could not evacuate Balwant soon enough, as sending a rescue team was dangerous in this situation.
Rajbir was sure that his other two sniper teams would have located the enemy sniper and would be shooting him down as planned.
