Her chance came that Tuesday morning at work.

She was waiting for the elevator to take her up to her office when Michael Derby stepped in just before the doors closed. His eyes widened in shock to find himself alone with her. He mumbled a greeting, immediately taking out his phone to check his texts, but Magda didn’t miss her chance.

‘How are you, Mr Derby?’ she asked as the lift began its slow climb.

‘I’m well, thank-you, Magda,’ he said warily. ‘How are you?’

‘I’m very well too,’ said Magda, ‘but I’ve never said how much I appreciated your help during the flood. It was lovely to have a warm flat, and clean sheets on my bed.’

‘It was nothing,’ he mumbled, not looking at her.

‘No,’ she said, ‘it was not nothing. It was kind of you to clean my shoes, and do my ironing, and make such a good job of the bathroom,’ she added, looking straight at him, daring him to look back. ‘It has never been so clean.’

He could smell her perfume, and feel her eyes on him. He looked at her, and looked away again, tormented by her smile which he thought slightly insolent.

They’d soon reach her floor, he told himself, and then he’d be safe.

Magda knew she had little time, and had to seize the moment.

‘I’m such a lazy woman,’ she said, trusting the instincts that told her he wanted to serve her. ‘There’s laundry and ironing that need done, shoes and clothes lying everywhere. And the sink’s full of dirty dishes again.’

She saw him blush, and immediately pressed home her advantage.

‘Tomorrow night at six would suit me best. I’ll expect you then, shall I, Mr Derby?’

He looked at her in amazement, but she just smiled at him. He opened his mouth to speak but made no sound.

‘Good, then,’ she said as the elevator doors opened at her floor. ‘Till tomorrow at six, and don’t be late.’
