About Hellenica

“With the cessation of winter, in early spring, the Athenians set sail with the whole of their force to Proconnesus, and thence advanced upon Chalcedon and Byzantium, encamping near the former town.”

Hellenica is a Classical Greek historical narrativeby Ancient Greek soldier and writer Xenophon, composed c. 430-354 BC. This edition features the english translation by Henry Graham Dakyns, published in 1892. Considered a significant work, it is one of the principal sources for the last seven years of the Peloponnesian War not covered by Thucydides.

Xenophon's account starts in 411 BC, the year where Thucydides breaks off, and ends in 362 BC, the year of the Battle of Mantineia. Divided into seven books, the first two narrate the final years of the war. The remaining books focus primarily on Sparta as the dominant city-state in Greece post-war; continuing into the period known as the Theban hegemony following Sparta's defeat at the battle of Leuctra.
