On the 15th of August 1965 I flew an Air New Zealand Electra from Auckland to Sydney. I was the Captain, 28 years old, I had been in the airline business just nineteen months; how lucky can you get?
This book is a sequel to my first venture into print, Cold War Warrior. That book is a tale about my experiences as a young pilot in the Royal Air Force in Germany during the Cold War years. This one is about what happened from the time I left the Air Force until I retired from flying in 1991. For my contemporaries; if you suspect I am writing about you you’re probably correct.
Following those early years eyeballing the Warsaw Pact countries I returned to New Zealand and joined TEAL, New Zealand’s International Airline, the forerunner to the present day Air New Zealand, it was not a simple process however, a lot of angst and heartache was involved. I then spent the next thirty years flying around the Pacific in big jets, it was great!
This book is not just about flying it includes everything else that’s include in an airline pilot’s life, the travel, the ‘holiday’ stopovers, living abroad, interesting experiences, some of them very interesting, the stresses and pressures, the rewards, it’s a rather unique life style.
